A piece of music is accompanied with a music video. Although some bands may decide to make one for purely artistic reasons, music videos are typically used to market and promote the sale of music recordings. A variety of filmmaking techniques are used to create music videos, including animation, live animation, and non-narrative methods like abstract film. Some music videos may not have a predetermined theme and may just be recordings of live performances of songs.
The purpose of a music video includes:
- To sell the song and invoke a reaction so that the audience remembers the song.
- To give the audience a better understanding of the song.
- To entertain and showoff the artists talents.
- Marketing for purpose of exposure and expansion of the artist's profile.
- To sell CD's, DVD's and downloads by creating memorable visuals.
- The overall purpose is to generate revenue for the record company.
